Nutshell: how long CRM implementation takes
Paid partnership
How long does CRM implementation take?
For a self-serve cloud CRM, implementation is the vendor's own setup sequence. Nutshell publishes a nine-step checklist resulting in deployment in days, not weeks (client-reported):
- Email connection: 3 settings steps.
- Data Migration: 24 to 48 business hours for team-assisted imports.
- Team Onboarding: Live support from day one of the 14-day trial.
Partner-led implementations of larger suites are scoped per project; no published figure applies.
- What it is
- Nutshell, a cloud CRM and email marketing platform from Nutshell LLC, Ann Arbor, Michigan, in operation since 2009
- Designed for
- Teams that want to set up the CRM themselves, with help on call, rather than commission an implementation project
- Built for
- Contact and pipeline management, email and calendar sync, forms, quoting and email campaigns in one account
- How it works
- Sign up, connect email, import contacts, add users; Nutshell's team will run the import for you on request
- Main consideration
- Phone support and API access are limited to the Enterprise plan; everyone else uses live chat, email and the help centre
Cllimber built this page from Nutshell's published documentation: nutshell.com's pricing, onboarding, support, integration and import pages, its help centre and its new-customer checklist, all read on 24 September 2026, with each figure linked where it appears. Category figures come from the SBA Office of Advocacy and Gartner. Cllimber did not run a hands-on test of Nutshell for this page, so setup times are Nutshell's stated figures, labelled client-reported, not Cllimber's measurements. Corrections with a source link are welcome at hello@cllimber.com.
How long does CRM implementation take?
CRM implementation takes days for a self-serve cloud CRM, on the vendor's own published figures, and is scoped per project for a partner-implemented enterprise suite, because the two are different kinds of project. For a self-serve cloud CRM such as Nutshell, implementation is the vendor's own setup checklist and can be timed from its documentation: Nutshell's checklist runs to nine steps, connecting email is three of them, and data imported by Nutshell's team appears within 24 to 48 business hours. Nutshell describes the whole setup as "days, not weeks" (client-reported, read 24 September 2026). Partner-led implementations of larger suites are scoped per project.
CRM implementation is the work between signing up and the whole team recording its deals in the system: connecting email, importing contacts and deals, adding users, matching the pipeline and fields to how the business sells, connecting the other tools the team uses, and training people to use it. How long it takes depends less on the size of the business than on which of those steps the team does itself, which the vendor does, and which need a third party.
Nutshell's new-customer checklist is nine steps, of which the first three, connect email, import contacts and invite a team member, are what a team needs before it can start selling; the remaining six cover custom fields, forms, leads, integrations, website analytics and email campaigns (Kickstart checklist, page modified 1 May 2026, read 24 September 2026). The one step with a published clock is the import, covered below. Nutshell says "days, not weeks" on its pricing and support pages and does not publish a figure in days, so the checklist and the import window are the measurable parts (client-reported, pricing, read 24 September 2026).
For a team of under twenty on a self-serve CRM, the import window is the longest fixed wait in the sequence; everything else is settings.
Does a CRM free trial include onboarding support?
A CRM free trial includes onboarding support only where the vendor says so, and Nutshell's does: the 14-day Nutshell trial includes live chat and email support from the first day, Monday to Friday 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern, and free data migration during the trial (client-reported, Nutshell customer support, read 24 September 2026).
The parts of onboarding that involve a named person are separate. A dedicated onboarding advisor, video calls for account configuration, one live team training call with the recording provided, and a 30-day check-in are free, but for qualifying new customers; Nutshell says the sales rep, whom every trial can reach by email, text or phone, confirms who qualifies. Customers who do not qualify get self-onboarding guides at no charge, and onboarding is not mandatory (Nutshell CRM onboarding, read 24 September 2026). The trial takes no card and ends without a charge (pricing FAQ, read 24 September 2026).
Does CRM implementation cost extra beyond the subscription?
CRM implementation costs nothing beyond the subscription with Nutshell, on its own account: Nutshell states there are no setup fees, implementation costs or surprise charges, and that initial data migration, including its white-glove import service, is free on every plan (client-reported, pricing FAQ and help centre, read 24 September 2026).
What is paid for is optional and separate: Nutshell Advisor, monthly scheduled calls with a CRM expert, is priced on its own page, and add-ons such as email marketing (per contact) and SMS (per message) are priced before you buy. For the other kind of CRM, an enterprise suite implemented by a partner, the implementation is normally quoted as a project separate from the licence; see the kinds of CRM below.
Who Nutshell fits
Nutshell fits a sales team that wants to be working in the CRM within days, with the vendor's support team doing the import and answering questions, and without a separate implementation budget.
The trade-off is the depth you get in return. Nutshell's own pages describe a setup a non-technical admin can run alone; they also place phone support, single sign-on, SQL data access and API support on the Enterprise plan only (Nutshell pricing, read 24 September 2026). A business that needs custom integrations built, or a phased rollout across several departments with governance sign-off, is describing a different kind of project.
What sets it apart, and what to weigh
What sets Nutshell apart on implementation is that the support other kinds of CRM sell as a project is included in the subscription: live support from the first day of the trial, an import done by Nutshell's team on any plan, and no setup fee (client-reported, customer support, read 24 September 2026).
What to weigh is the shape of that support. Live chat and email run in US Eastern business hours from a team in Michigan; outside those hours a question waits until the next business day. A team on the US West Coast loses the late afternoon; a team in Europe overlaps for a few hours. Email-marketing data imports and web-form setup by the support team are for Pro and above, and ongoing white-glove imports after onboarding are Enterprise only (Nutshell help centre, updated 4 August 2026, read 24 September 2026).
Why implementation time matters now
These figures describe the US small-business economy and the CRM market as a whole. They are not about Nutshell.
Gartner figures are taken from the public summary of each report; the full reports are available to Gartner clients.
Nutshell by the numbers
Every figure here is client-reported, from nutshell.com, read 24 September 2026.

How long does CRM data migration take?
CRM data migration takes 24 to 48 business hours in Nutshell when its support team runs the import; migrations from another CRM through its partner Import2 run a sample first, then the full transfer, and the old CRM can stay live until you switch (client-reported, customer support and Nutshell for SMBs, read 24 September 2026).
The in-app importer at Company Settings > Import lists Office 365, G Suite, spreadsheet and another CRM as sources, and the white-glove request form sits on the same screen (Kickstart checklist, read 24 September 2026). If you are leaving another CRM, Nutshell asks for access to both accounts; if you are coming from spreadsheets, it asks for a CSV or Excel file with data types separated into columns following its template. Its team says it matches existing fields, creates new ones where needed and de-duplicates as it goes. Import2 can migrate from 25 or more CRM platforms, and during the trial it brings over a sample of 100 companies with related people, emails and files, with the rest imported on purchase (Nutshell blog, 13 February 2026, read 24 September 2026).
How long does CRM onboarding take for a sales team?
CRM onboarding for a sales team in Nutshell is two settings steps per user, one training call and a check-in at 30 days. Adding each user means updating the user count in Billing, then creating the user under Users and teams. For qualifying new customers, Nutshell runs one live virtual training call on the team's own configuration, provides the recording for new hires, and checks in at 30 days (client-reported, CRM onboarding, read 24 September 2026).
Nutshell's checklist puts email first, before contacts, so each rep's inbox is connected before their deals arrive. For everyone, whether or not they qualify for onboarding, there are live 30-minute demos, a monthly webinar on dashboards and pipeline management, and the help centre's video series on creating records, leads, activities and reports (customer support, read 24 September 2026).
How long does it take to connect a CRM to Gmail, Outlook and QuickBooks?
Connecting a CRM to Gmail, Outlook and QuickBooks takes five settings steps for email and calendar in Nutshell, with Google or Office 365 connecting directly and the pricing page saying it works with all email providers. The Nutshell QuickBooks Online integration is included on every plan and imports existing customer lists "in minutes" (client-reported, read 24 September 2026).
The five steps are: confirm the address in your profile, set up sending, choose Google, Office 365 or another provider, switch on email sync, and enable the calendar and choose which activities sync; one synced address per user, up to five via SMTP, with one-way or two-way calendar sync (email and calendar sync, read 24 September 2026). Privacy controls are set at the same time: company-wide and personal blocklists, internal emails excluded by default, and for Gmail users the option to sync labelled messages only. QuickBooks Online sends people, companies and leads to QuickBooks from their pages, creates invoices from the lead page, and exports up to 5,000 active products at a time, with larger catalogues running in the background; Xero, Square, Stripe and Shopify connect too, and Sage via Zapier (QuickBooks Online integration, read 24 September 2026).
Self-serve CRM and partner-implemented suites
The question "how long does CRM implementation take" gets three different answers because it covers three different kinds of project. The table describes kinds of tool and ways of working, not named products; the figures in the first two rows are Nutshell's, sourced above.
| Kind | Who does the work | What "implementation" consists of | What is published about time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Self-serve cloud CRM | The team's own admin, with the vendor's support team on chat and email | The vendor's setup checklist: email, import, users, fields, integrations | Nutshell: nine-step checklist, three steps to connect email, imports within 24–48 business hours, "days, not weeks" (client-reported) |
| Cloud CRM with vendor onboarding | The same, plus a named advisor from the vendor for configuration and training | Setup plus scheduled calls: configuration, one or more training sessions, a follow-up | Nutshell: dedicated advisor, configuration calls, one training call and a 30-day check-in for qualifying customers (client-reported) |
| Enterprise suite with an implementation partner | An external partner, scoped and quoted as a project | Requirements, configuration, data migration, integration, testing, phased go-live | Set per project by the partner; not a published figure |
Kinds describe ways of working, not named products.

Getting started
Nutshell's own new-customer checklist, in its order (client-reported, Kickstart checklist, page modified 1 May 2026, read 24 September 2026):
- Connect email. Add your address to your profile, set up sending, switch on sync. Google and Office 365 connect directly.
- Import contacts. Choose Office 365, G Suite, spreadsheet or another CRM, or submit the white-glove request and let Nutshell's team do it.
- Invite a team member. Update the user count in Billing, then create the user.
- Create a custom field for companies, people or leads.
- Create a Nutshell form that creates records when someone submits it.
- Create and use leads in the pipeline.
- Integrate other tools from the integrations hub.
- Add Nutshell Analytics to your website.
- Try Nutshell Campaigns, with 150 free sends a month.
Pricing
Prices in US dollars, per user per month, from nutshell.com/pricing (page modified 18 September 2026), read 24 September 2026. The page shows the annual-billing price with the monthly saving beside it; the monthly column below adds that saving back. No seat minimum or maximum. Check Nutshell's site for current pricing.
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | What each tier contains |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation | $13 | $19 | Unlimited contacts and storage, email and calendar sync, 10 AI outcomes, AI chatbot, forms and landing pages; 100 open leads |
| Growth | $25 | $32 | Foundation plus activity reports, sales quotas, lead assignment rules, stage goals, 20 AI outcomes |
| Pro | $42 | $49 | Growth plus 5 custom pipelines, sales automation, advanced reporting, meeting scheduler, 40 AI outcomes |
| Business | $59 | $67 | Pro plus 10 pipelines, audit log and changelog, teams and territories, 100 AI outcomes |
| Enterprise | $79 | $89 | Business plus unlimited pipelines and custom fields, SSO, SQL access, phone support, 150 AI outcomes |
Add-ons: Marketing $49 a month; Engagement $16 per user a month; email marketing from $5 a month by contact tier (1,000 contacts is $25 a month with 8,000 sends); SMS from $15 a month; Nutshell IQ prospecting from $37 a month; Proposals and Invoices $79 a month (client-reported, read 24 September 2026).
What it is not designed as
- A partner-implemented system. There is no implementation project to buy; setup is the checklist, with Nutshell's team on chat and email.
- A phone-first support relationship. Scheduled phone support is Enterprise only; other plans use live chat, email and the help centre.
- A developer platform on the lower tiers. API support for custom integrations sits with Enterprise; below that, integrations come from the built-in list, the App Marketplace and Zapier.
Considerations before adopting
- Ask whether you qualify. The dedicated advisor, configuration calls and team training are free for qualifying new customers; Nutshell says the sales rep confirms it. If you do not qualify, plan to run the nine steps yourself with chat support.
- Check the support window against your hours. Monday to Friday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Eastern. A West Coast or European team should note where the overlap falls.
- Size the Foundation cap. Foundation allows 100 open leads and one pipeline; a team with more open deals than that starts on Growth or Pro.

How long does it take to set up a CRM for a small business?
Setting up a CRM for a small business takes days on a self-serve cloud CRM, because the setup is the vendor's checklist. Nutshell's is nine steps, of which the first three, connect email, import contacts and invite a team member, are what a team needs before selling. Connecting email is three settings steps and data imported by Nutshell's team appears within 24 to 48 business hours (client-reported, read 24 September 2026).
Can you implement a CRM without a consultant?
You can implement a self-serve cloud CRM without a consultant. Nutshell's onboarding is not mandatory; customers who do not qualify for the free onboarding get self-onboarding guides, and live chat and email support are included on every plan for the life of the subscription (client-reported, customer support, read 24 September 2026).
What slows a CRM implementation down?
In a self-serve CRM implementation such as Nutshell's, the one published wait is the import, which Nutshell puts at 24 to 48 business hours once it has your file or account access. The variable is the file itself: Nutshell asks for data types separated into columns following its template, so a spreadsheet that needs reshaping first adds the time it takes to reshape it (client-reported, read 24 September 2026).
What are the phases of a CRM implementation?
The phases of a self-serve CRM implementation are the vendor's checklist. Nutshell's is nine steps: connect email, import contacts, invite a team member, create a custom field, create a form, create and use leads, integrate other tools, add website analytics, and try email campaigns (client-reported, read 24 September 2026).
Does Nutshell's free trial include data migration?
Nutshell's free trial includes data migration: Nutshell says migration is free during the trial. Its Import2 tool migrates a sample of 100 companies with related people, emails and files during the trial, and the rest on purchase; its team will also run a white-glove import on request (client-reported, Nutshell blog, 13 February 2026, read 24 September 2026).
Which Nutshell plan do you need to get help with implementation?
Every Nutshell plan includes live chat and email support and the white-glove data import. Email-marketing data imports and web-form setup by the support team are Pro and above; ongoing white-glove imports after onboarding, scheduled phone support and API support are Enterprise (client-reported, help centre, read 24 September 2026).
